system status


sunday. fourteenth consecutive D grade. automated jobs ran on schedule. the real work today was plumbing. fixing things that broke quietly while nobody was looking.


what was built/changed


three deployment fixes shipped today, and they tell a story about what running ai agent automation tools actually looks like once the demo is over.


the first fix: the daily digest generator. this is a script that wakes up every morning, reads what happened in the system, and writes a blog post about it. sounds simple. except blog posts have metadata at the top... title, date, tags, a short excerpt. and if that excerpt contains a quotation mark or a colon, the whole file becomes unreadable to the publishing system. the generator was creating posts that looked fine to a human but broke silently during deploy. the fix was a sanitizer that escapes special characters before they hit the metadata block. three lines of code. weeks of intermittent deploy failures.


the second fix: Node.js version pinning. Node 24 is now the default runtime, which means any build system that doesn't explicitly say which version it wants will get upgraded automatically. Netlify started building with Node 24 and some dependencies hadn't caught up yet. the fix was one line in a config file telling the build system to use Node 24 intentionally instead of getting it by surprise. the difference between choosing an upgrade and having one forced on you at 2am is the difference between a deploy and a rollback.


the third fix: the Substack newsletter embed. I had built a system where the server would fetch the Substack page and forward the content to the reader. clever in theory. in practice, browsers treat that as a security violation. one domain pretending to serve content from another domain is exactly what phishing attacks do, so browsers block it by default. the fix was the obvious one... just embed the newsletter directly in an iframe and let the browser handle the trust relationship itself. simpler. more reliable. the way it should have been built from the start.

observations


there's a pattern here that I think matters for anyone building with AI or automation generally.


the exciting part of building an ai agent automation system is the first version. the script runs, data flows, posts get generated. that's the part that makes good LinkedIn content and impressive demos. what nobody shows is month two. month two is when YAML frontmatter breaks because a blog title contained a colon. month two is when a runtime update silently changes how your code executes. month two is when the clever architectural decision from week one turns out to violate browser security policy.


I've started thinking about this as the maintenance iceberg. the visible part, the new feature, the automation that works, is maybe 20% of the total effort. the other 80% is fixing edge cases, hardening inputs, replacing clever solutions with boring ones that don't break.


this maps to something I see in the AI agent space broadly. the gap between "I built an AI agent this weekend" and "I've been running AI agents in production for three months" is enormous. the first person built a demo. the second person has a janitor's keyring and knows where every pipe leaks.


the skill that matters most isn't building the agent. it's maintaining the agent. and that's a fundamentally different kind of work... less creative, more diagnostic, harder to show off, and completely essential.


gaps / honest critique


fourteen D grades in a row. the grading system is working correctly. the automated layer runs, commits happen, but the human decision layer is stalled. no new client outreach. no new content strategy decisions. no new features shipped. the system is maintaining itself, which is the point of building it, but maintenance without forward motion is just treading water.


the daily digest generator keeps breaking in new ways because I built it fast and never wrote proper input validation. each fix is a band-aid on a system that needs a rewrite of its frontmatter handling. I keep patching instead of rebuilding because the patches are faster. that's technical debt accruing interest.


the contentos optimizer runs daily but I haven't audited whether its improvements actually improve anything measurable. it's automation for automation's sake until I connect it to real performance data.


tomorrow's focus


  • audit contentos optimizer output against actual site metrics. is it helping or just busy?
  • outline the daily digest frontmatter rewrite. stop patching, scope the proper fix.
  • pick one stalled human-decision item (outbound, content strategy, or feature work) and move it forward. the machines don't need me to babysit them. they need me to make the decisions they can't.

random thought


the best code I wrote today was deleting code. the Substack server-side forwarding was 40+ lines of fetch logic, header manipulation, error handling. the replacement was an iframe tag. sometimes the most productive thing you can do is realize the problem you solved didn't need solving.
