thursday. six consecutive D grades. the Mac Mini ran its crons, the Reddit cache synced, and every human-driven commit today was an edit to something that already existed. revision day.


what was built/changed


the big thing today wasn't a feature. it was a blog post about HeyReach that went through seven commits before it was publishable. seven. not because the first draft was bad, but because each pass caught something the previous one missed.


first pass: too many competitor names. when you write about a tool you like, the instinct is to contrast it against everything else. "unlike Tool X, HeyReach does Y." that framing poisons the post. it turns a recommendation into a hit piece. so those got stripped.


second pass: enterprise language. words like "enterprise-grade" and "scalable solution" that sound impressive but mean nothing to the person reading at 11pm trying to figure out which outreach tool to actually buy. gone.


third pass: specific pricing figures. prices change. blog posts don't update themselves. publishing someone else's pricing is a liability with an expiration date. removed.


fourth pass: em dashes and comparison framing. the small stuff that makes content read like it was generated rather than written. "I tried other tools and they all fell short" is the kind of sentence that technically says something but communicates nothing. cut.


the other thing that shipped: a GTM Coding Agent Playbook. a guide for people who want to use AI agents for go-to-market work but don't know where to start. not theory. actual setup steps, tool choices, workflow patterns. the kind of document I wish existed six months ago when I was duct-taping my first free ai agent automation tool together from Claude, cron jobs, and a prayer.


on the infrastructure side, the content intelligence cron kept timing out when calling Opus for analysis. bumped the timeout to 600 seconds and added retry logic. three attempts before it gives up. small fix, but these crons run unattended at midnight. if they fail silently, the data goes stale and nobody notices until a week later when the daily briefs start repeating themselves.


observations


seven commits to publish one blog post. that ratio tells you something important about where AI content creation actually is right now.


the generation part is solved. any model can write a 1500-word blog post about a SaaS tool in 30 seconds. the hard part is everything after generation. editorial judgment. what to leave out. what sounds like marketing even though it's technically true. what ages badly. what accidentally makes you look like you're attacking someone else's product when you meant to praise yours.


this is the part that doesn't get talked about enough when people describe their content automation setup. they show the pipeline. source material goes in, draft comes out, maybe there's a review step, then publish. clean arrow diagram. what actually happens is seven commits of a human going "no, not that word. not that framing. not that claim."


the playbook guide is interesting for a different reason. it's the first time I've written documentation for other people about how this system works. not a blog post about the philosophy. not a build log. an actual step-by-step guide someone could follow. that shift from building for yourself to documenting for others is where a side project starts becoming a product. or at least becomes useful beyond your own terminal.


gaps / honest critique


six D grades in a row. the scoring system weighs shipped features and new functionality heavily. content work, editorial passes, and documentation don't register. that's a design problem with the scoring, but it's also a real signal. the last week has been almost entirely content and maintenance. no new systems. no new automation. no new pages.


the HeyReach post took a full session of editing. that's too long for one blog post, even a sensitive one. the root cause is that the first draft wasn't briefed well enough. if the content generation prompt had included "no competitor mentions, no pricing, no enterprise language" upfront, three of those seven commits wouldn't have happened. the fix isn't better editing. it's better prompting.


the playbook guide shipped but hasn't been tested by anyone who isn't me. documentation written by the builder is almost always missing steps that feel obvious to the person who built it. need external eyes on it.


and the content intel cron fix is a bandaid. the real question is why Opus needs 600 seconds for a content analysis task. either the prompt is too broad or the input context is too large. haven't investigated.


tomorrow's focus


  • audit the content generation prompts. build a pre-flight checklist that catches the HeyReach-style issues before the first draft, not after seven revisions.
  • investigate the Opus timeout root cause. 600 seconds for content analysis suggests the task needs restructuring, not a longer leash.
  • ship something that actually moves the score. a feature, a page, an integration. content days are necessary but the system needs forward motion too.

random thought


there's a version of content creation where the AI writes and the human publishes. and there's a version where the AI drafts and the human edits. they sound similar. they're completely different jobs. the first one scales. the second one teaches you what you actually think. seven commits on one blog post and I know more about my own editorial standards than I did yesterday morning. that's not inefficiency. that's the curriculum.
